The difference between ETFE and PET used for flexible solar panels

The difference between ETFE and PET used for flexible solar panels

ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) are two common materials used for flexible solar panels. Here are the key differences between them:

Weather Resistance and Corrosion Resistance:

    1. ETFE: Has high weather resistance and corrosion resistance, able to withstand UV radiation and chemical exposure over a long period, making it suitable for harsh environments.
    2. PET: Comparatively, PET has lower weather and corrosion resistance, being more susceptible to UV radiation and some chemicals, requiring more frequent maintenance and protection.

Light Transmission and Optical Performance:

    1. ETFE: Possesses excellent light transmission, allowing more effective light energy transfer to the photovoltaic cells, thus enhancing energy conversion efficiency.
    2. PET: Has poorer light transmission, which may require special surface treatments or designs to improve optical performance.

Mechanical Properties:

    1. ETFE: Offers higher strength and tear resistance, making it more suitable for complex curved surfaces or applications requiring greater mechanical strength.
    2. PET: Relatively softer, suitable for flat or simple curved surfaces, but with lower tensile strength and tear resistance.

Cost and Manufacturing Complexity:

    1. ETFE: Generally more expensive and complex to manufacture but provides higher performance and long-term reliability.
    2. PET: Lower cost and simpler to manufacture, suitable for mass production and applications but may not be as stable and durable as ETFE.

The choice of material usually depends on specific application requirements and budget considerations.
